Over 60 Palestinian children die from starvation under Israel’s WEAPONIZED HUNGER strategy

By Ramon Tomey
- Over 60 Palestinian children in Gaza have died due to Israel’s blockade on aid, which humanitarian groups describe as “weaponized hunger.” UNICEF reports 16,736 children treated for acute malnutrition since January.
- Gaza is now the “hungriest place on Earth,” with aid deliberately obstructed, militarized food distribution, and Western complicity worsening famine conditions. An average of 112 malnourished children are hospitalized daily.
- Israeli forces reportedly shoot unarmed Palestinians at aid sites, contributing to 600 deaths and 4,000 injuries near militarized food distribution zones, as confirmed by Israeli soldiers’ testimonies.
- Despite Gaza’s crisis, Western nations continue funding Israel’s military while allowing 500 aid trucks to be blocked daily at borders – contrasting swift aid responses in Ukraine and Sudan.
- UN officials condemn Israel’s starvation tactics as an “abomination,” urging immediate international intervention to prevent further mass deaths under what they call a “slow-motion extermination.”
Israel’s continued use of “weaponized hunger” tactics has claimed the lives of 60 Palestinian children – with that number set to continue rising unless the world acts.
Gaza’s Government Media Office announced the deaths of the children in a statement Saturday, June 28. It blamed actions imposed by Tel Aviv for this “slow-motion extermination,” including a blockade on aid entering the besieged strip, crossing closures and bans on infant formula.
True enough, humanitarian agencies warn that the Strip has become the “hungriest place on Earth.” This man-made catastrophe at the enclave has been fueled by blocked aid, militarized food distribution and Western complicity.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reports 16,736 children treated for acute malnutrition since January – a preventable tragedy, given Israel’s refusal to allow adequate food and medical aid. “Man-made decisions are costing lives,” warned UNICEF Middle East and North Africa Regional Director Edouard Beigbeder.
Centuries of colonial occupation and decades of blockade have culminated in Gaza’s descent into famine. The crisis escalated after Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attacks on Israel triggered a devastating military response, with Gaza’s death toll now exceeding 18,700 Palestinians. But recent months have seen starvation eclipse bombs as the deadliest threat.
Gazans forced to choose: Die by bullets or by starvation
According to United Nations data, an average of 112 malnourished children are hospitalized daily. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes continue targeting civilians. At least 20 were killed during an overnight attack on Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood.
Evidence confirms Israel’s systematic weaponization of hunger. The U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), ostensibly an aid distributor, has reportedly caused 600 Palestinian deaths and 4,000 injuries near its militarized food sites. Haaretz published Israeli soldiers’ testimonies admitting troops were ordered to shoot unarmed civilians seeking sustenance at GHF zones. Thameen al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the UN high commissioner for human rights, denounced the policy. He compared it to forcing Gazans to choose between “starving to death or being killed for food.” Meanwhile, UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini branded the scheme an “abomination” designed to humiliate a besieged population.
Despite this, Washington and European powers continue funding Israel’s war machine while paying lip service to Gaza’s suffering. While Western nations rushed aid to Ukraine and Sudan, they have enabled Israel’s stranglehold on Gaza – even as 500 aid trucks sit idly at borders daily, barred entry.
Gaza resident Mahmoud al-Nakhala’s despair echoes across bombed-out neighborhoods. “It’s heartbreaking that people watch what’s happening in Gaza – the suffering, the massacres – and stay silent,” he told Al Jazeera. “At this point, we can’t even comprehend what’s happening here any more.”
The crisis demands urgent global action. With Gaza’s entire population now at famine-risk, the international community faces a moral litmus test. Will it enforce humanitarian law, or continue enabling mass starvation under the guise of geopolitics?
